Nightmare at the QuarterThe air was alive with passion and energy, perfect for a Saturday night at The Quarter. Jake walked around the place on his normal path, he was hoping that for once the place would open on time and without problems. It was not to be the case tonight. As he rounded the back of the building about to go inside, he saw the body. His hand was reaching for the cell phone in his pocket even as his feet quickened their pace over to where the mangled body lay. His eyes were searching for signs of life as his fingers dialed 911. Just as the lady picked up on the other end he saw the body shake as the person tried to draw in a breath. "911 what is your emergency?" her efficient voice asked. "The name's Jake Wilson over at the Quarter. Someone has been beaten badly in the lot at the back of my place. I need medical assistance now." he stated not even thinking about the fact that for the first time in ten long years he had given his name. The body on the ground shook again and he knelt down beside it. "I will stay on the line but I am putting you on speaker, I have an EMT license and will be assessing the scene, please record." his words were clipped and sharp. He had hoped he would never be saying them again when he walked away from the force ten years before. He sat the phone down on the ground where they could hear him and began to check on the person laying there. "Can you hear me?" he asked reaching out and placing his hand on the persons shoulder. His only response was a low moan. "They are still alive", he said knowing that the lady had set the call to record him. The jacket covering the shoulder was soaked with blood and Jake wondered what had happened to this person. "My name is Jake, I won't hurt you. I am here to help. The paramedics are on the way." he began to try and assess what damage had been done. He was having a hard time even assessing if the person he was kneeling over was male or female. Running his fingers lightly over the person's shoulder and back he could feel nothing broken. He made sure to check carefully over the spine hoping that by checking he wasn't going to cause any further damage. "Back and spine seem to be fine. Large amounts of blood are visible but no wounds have been detected as of yet." When he had determined that the person's back was most likely not broken he tugged lightly at the shoulder to pull them onto their back so he could finish his assessment. As the body shifted to its back, his heart dropped to his feet, "Oh god no." without thought his fingers went to the once handsome face of the man laying there. "Jessie what happened?" he asked forgetting the phone was there and that help was on its way. Laying on the ground in front of him was the one man from his past that ever meant anything to him. Jessie didn't answer him, just blinked his eyes. Jake reached out once again and tried to wipe some of the blood from Jessie's face. His heart broke when he realized that it had taken most of the damage. "Any further information?" he heard from the phone. Jake picked it up leaving one hand on the top of Jessie's chest. "White male, early thirties, name is Jessie J. McKlory. Address unknown at this time, massive trauma to face and neck." he lifted his hand up to hang over Jessie's face, "Can you follow my fingers with your eyes Jessie?" he asked praying that his old friend wasn't as hurt as he thought he was. Again his prayers weren't answered as Jessie continued to stare straight ahead. "No response to visual stimuli." Jake continued, the surrounding silence suddenly broken by the sirens as emergency vehicles began to arrive. Jake stepped back as the first set climbed out of the ambulance and came toward him at nearly a dead run. He stood back and let them work hoping that they could save Jessie. As soon as he was stable the lead medic turned to Jake, "You want to ride with him?" the man asked with a strange look on his face. "I wouldn't want to see you trying to drive down to general." Jake didn't understand what he meant but climbed into the back of the ambulance and sat next to Jessie. All he could think was someone had hurt his old friend and this time he wouldn't get another chance to say all the things he had been putting off for years. "Jess man you can't die, you have to fight. I don't know what you were doing at The Quarter tonight but you can not die. I have too many things I need to say yet." he rambled not noticing the lead medic's smile. He held Jessie's limp hand in his lightly making sure that he wouldn't cause any further damage to him. It didn't take long for them to get to the hospital. Jake stood back at the emergency room entrance, he hated hospitals. He watched as they wheeled Jessie away to surgery. The lead EMT stepping up as the door swung shut after them. "Your name Jake?" he asked. Jake just looked at the man, "Yeah, thanks for getting there so quick. He really didn't look good." Jake rambled looking around the waiting room and not actually seeing anything. "My name's Kage. I thought you might need a friend and I'm off shift for the night." he smiled holding his hand out hoping that Jake was going to be able to hold it together and knowing that it was very unlikely. He knew the look he had seen on Jake's face as he ran up. The love had shown so brightly it was nearly blinding, but he had a feeling it was blinding no one but Jake himself. Jake paced back and forth in the waiting room unwilling to sit and unable to force himself to leave until he knew if his friend was going to make it. He looked and Kage and wondered what the man was thinking, something about the look in his eyes said that he understood what Jake had never spoken aloud. The since he was six years old he had loved Jessie with everything in him. "How did you know?" he asked as Kage stepped closer to him. Kage thought about playing dumb, but it wasn't his style, he reached out and put his hand on Jake's shoulder. Carefully he lead him over to the chairs in the corner away from everyone. "I knew because I have seen that look on my own face once." he felt Jake shudder and knew that he was right, "Have you told him?" he asked watching as the tears fell him the other man's eyes. "I haven't even found the courage to say it out loud." Jake whispered. He looked into Kage's eyes and understanding there that he had never felt before. Kage smiled, "How long has it been Jake?" Jake shivered his heart racing, "almost longer than I can remember." he threw his arms around Kage's shoulders and dropped his head, "He can't die. I can't live without him, but I don't know how to tell him. We've been friends for years, done everything together. Oh god what am I going to do if he doesn't make it?" he cried. Kage was about to try to comfort him when he saw a doctor step out of the back and glance around. "Jake Wilson?" the doctor asked. Jake lifted his head heedless of the tears running down his face and prayed it was good news. "I'm Jake. Is he going to make it?" The doctor stepped forward and reached for Jake's hands. "The news isn't good, but it is better than it could be." he paused while he watched the young man stagger under the news that his friend was at least still alive. When he saw Jake straighten back up he continued. "You friend is going to live, however there was massive damage to his face and neck. With a few surgeries we can repair most of the damage and give him back the structure of his face. But there is one thing we can't fix. Your friend is going to be blind." Jake's heart skipped, Jessie was going to make it. It took a moment to register that the doctor had said Jessie was blind. When that realization hit he fell to his knees, tears streaming down his face. "He was a photographer..." he whimpered softly. He dropped to his knees, "Can I see him?" he asked without lifting his head from his hands. The Doctor looked from Jake to Kage, his eyes showing relief as they connected with Kage's. It was a look they both knew well. This was a man asking to see someone they loved. "Only for a few minutes and only once he gets to his room. Should be about 25 minutes." The doctor told him placing a light hand on Jake's shoulder. "I'll send someone to get you when he gets to his room." |
